What is a Mole mapping?

Mole Scan

What does it do?

Mole mapping, also known as total body photography, involves a thorough exam of your skin that documents moles over time, designed to catch changes early. Using high-resolution images and expert diagrams, it looks for atypical or dysplastic nevi – the unusual and suspicious moles that may require attention. That allows skin issues, such as melanoma, to be detected before they develop. Mole mapping is a really simple way to keep on top of your skin health and can provide peace of mind that nothing’s been missed.

Several benefits include:

  • Early detection of skin cancer
  • Non-invasive
  • Tracks mole changes
  • Peace of mind

The many types

Our ABCDE mole assessment

The ABCDE mole assessment can be used to assess potential signs of skin cancer, especially melanoma. Here’s what it stands for:

A: Asymmetry — One half of the mole appears different from the other half.

B: Border — The border is uneven.

C: Color – The mole is of varied colors, such as different shades of brown or black.

D: Diameter — It’s bigger than 6mm, about the size of a pencil eraser.

E: Evolving – The mole changes in size, shape or color over time.

The procedure
Smart Skin Monitoring
How does a computerized mole mapping work?

It captures clear digital images of your moles with a specialized high resolution camera. These are kept in a computer system. The system tries to find any changes within your moles over time, comparing recent pictures with older ones. This makes it easy for doctors to identify early signs of problems — including skin cancer. It’s a straightforward and effective way to monitor your existing moles and your skin health.

Regular Skin Checks
How often should you have your moles checked?

Skin cancer can appear at any age, especially if you’re at higher risk. Your risk of skin cancer grows as you age. That is why it can be a good idea to start checking your moles and skin regularly, particularly if you are in your 50s or older. And getting checked early helps catch any changes and keep your skin healthy.

Quick Skin Tracking
How long does mole mapping take?

A particular mole mapping session typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, again depending on how many moles there are to check. It takes only a few minutes, requires no needles and is an important tool in monitoring changes in your skin.

Routine Mole Mapping
How frequently should I get a mole map?

If you have many moles, or higher chance of skin cancer, it’s good idea that every 6 months you have a mole map. Regular checkups detect changes early, keeping your skin healthy.

Comfortable Skin Check
Does mole map cause any discomfort?

Mole mapping is painless and totally non invasive. It’s a fast procedure where your moles are photographed. You may feel some pressure, but it’s not painful.

Am I suitable
Is Mole mapping good for me?

Mole mapping is particularly useful for individuals with a family history of skin cancer, multiple moles, or significant sun exposure. Fair skinned people also have an increased risk of skin issues and should be checked on a regular basis. But mole mapping is beneficial for anyone, as it provides a comprehensive check of your skin.

Regardless of mole mapping, it is important to have your moles checked annually by a health care provider during a full body exam and to perform self skin exams.

The risks
Can risks be prevented?

There are some limitations to mole mapping. It does not pick up skin lesions on hard-to-see places like the scalp or genitals. It’s also possible that false positives or negatives may result, which would impact the outcomes.

Melanoma skin cancer that grow quickly could go undetected until the next session, and other skin cancers, such as pink or scaly varieties, may not appear clearly in the images.
