What is Lipoma?

Unwanted fatty lumps

Fatty tissue

What does it do?

A lipoma is a non-cancerous, benign tumor that forms under the skin. Most are generally harmless, but they can cause pain if compressed or interfere with movement. While doctors do not know the exact cause of lipoma formation, they believe that it may have a genetic factor and can grow as a result of small traumas to the skin. Lipomas can be found in areas like the back, neck, arms, or legs.

Our talented surgeons at the Harley Street Skin Clinic can remove them for you, whether it is because they are uncomfortable or simply for cosmetic reasons. Our goal is to address all of the above and minimize scarring while providing comfort and ease with both therapies: liposuction for larger lipomas or a direct surgical excision approach for smaller ones.

Several benefits include:

  • Improved comfort
  • Enhanced appearance
  • Minimized recurrence
  • Quick recovery

Types of Lipoma

Conventional Lipoma

Conventional lipomas are the most common type, consisting of normal fat cells that are typically located beneath the skin.

Fibrolipoma

This type is firmer because it has a mixture of fat and fibrous tissue.

Angiolipoma

This type contains fat and blood vessels, so it may feel uncomfortable at times.

Spindle Cell Lipoma

A spindle-shaped cell lipoma is often found on the neck or back.

Pleomorphic Lipoma

Often found in older adults, pleomorphic lipomas consist of large fat cells of several different sizes.

Hibernoma

A rare type of lipoma composed of brown fat, most often present around the upper back or thighs.

The Lipoma Removal Procedure

Lipoma removal process.

How does lipoma removal surgery work?

Most lipomas are removed by making a small incision in the skin and extracting the mass. The surgeon applies local anesthesia to numb the area and then sutures the incision, which is covered by a bandage. Lipomas do not tend to recur after they are surgically excised.

Different methods used for lipoma removal

What methods are available?

Lipomas are removed through a minor surgical procedure where the growth is excised whole. If there are multiple or very large lipomas to be removed, it may be more efficient for the specialist to propose a combination of surgery and liposuction to minimize scarring. For larger and multiple lipomas, laser lipolysis is also available, which involves destroying overgrown fat cells using a nanometer wavelength before surgical removal.

Duration of the treatment.

How long does the procedure take?

Large or complex lipomas may need to be excised under general anesthesia, while smaller ones can usually be removed under local anesthesia. The surgery typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes, although additional time will be required for the administration of general anesthesia.

Size for lipoma surgery.

At what size should I get a lipoma removed?

Lipomas can be easily removed as an outpatient procedure. Small lipomas (less than 10 cm) can generally be removed under local anesthesia with a short recovery period.

Managing pain and discomfort.

How painful is lipoma removal surgery?

Your comfort is maintained by an injection of local anesthesia into the area where the lipoma will be removed. After the procedure, cold compresses often help alleviate discomfort. It is advisable to avoid any form of heavy exertion to ensure a safe recovery.

Prepare

Before Treatment

What do you need to know before the treatment?

  • Your doctor will conduct a physical examination during your initial consultation.
  • Bathe before your treatment and wash the area you will have treated with antibacterial soap.
  • Do not shave the area to be treated.
  • Do not take any medications that lower blood pressure on the day of your procedure.
  • Cease all blood thinners except Aspirin. You can take Aspirin if you need it.
  • Stop taking blood thinning medications five days prior to your surgery, and then you may start taking them the day after.

Recovery

After Treatment

What is the recommended post-treatment care?

  • You can put ice on and off to the area over the dressing, as ice will help with swelling.
  • Take Ibuprofen (200–400 mg) every 6 hours for pain.
  • You can shower the next day or when you are comfortable.
  • No vigorous activities for 2 days.
  • You can also keep taking your usual medicines and diet.

Prevent

After Treatment

Is post-operative visit necessary?
