What is a Keloid scar removal?

Keloid Reduction

Why is it essential?

Keloid scar removal is a type of treatment to reduce or remove a thick, raised scar known as a keloid. Keloid scar excision is pertinent for aesthetic and comfort enhancement. These scars can be deep and have an impact on someone’s view of their skin. Treatment can even out the skin and ease pain or itching. It also restores mobility especially when the keloid is near a joint and may also prevent the scar from getting larger over time, giving better reassurance and relief.

Several benefits include:

  • Better appearance
  • Less discomfort
  • Stop growth
  • Increased confidence

All about keloid scars

Keloid scars are raised scars that typically develop on a healing wound. They can form after surgery, following major trauma to the skin, around a new body piercing or even after minor skin damage like an acne breakout. They are firm, shiny, rubbery-feeling scars and tend to show up on the shoulders, upper chest and earlobes.

This type of scarring is also more common with individuals with darker skin tones and is known as keloid scarring. That is because our genes can contribute to the way our wounds heal and thus affect our odds of developing a keloid.

The procedure
Non-Surgical Scar Solutions"
Are keloid scars always surgically removable?

For keloid and hypertrophic scars, corticosteroid injections are often the first-line therapy. The injection decreases the collagen production which helps to reduce the scar and makes it flatter. This treatment is usually done early and can slowly help fade the scar.

It is also a safe and non-surgical procedure and can require multiple sessions for optimal results. Most patients have shortened scar, reduced pain, and minimal downtime.

Comprehensive Scar Removal
How keloid scars are removed?
  • Steroid Injections: These are injected into scars to help break down the scar tissue, reducing its size and thickness.
  • Surgery: For extremely large keloids that don’t respond to other treatments, surgical removal may be the best option.
  • Radiation therapy: Low dose of radiation is used to shrink keloids and help prevent them from reforming after surgery.
  • Laser Therapy: Laser treatment is used to diminish scars and create even skin tone.
  • Dermabrasion: It sanded scar tissue to smooth and soften with the surrounding skin.
Quick Scar Recovery
How long does keloid surgery take?

Treatments for removal of keloid scar can be minor, which can be durations ranging from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the treatment option. The majority of people will be able to return to normal activities throughout a couple of days.

Smooth Healing Ahead
What can I expect after the removal?

You will have a sterile dressing covering the wound after keloid treatment. You may need pain medication, and your doctor will make a follow-up appointment to assess healing.

Managed Pain Relief
Does keloid removal surgery hurt?

Removing keloids can be also painful, especially on sensitive areas. Medications manage discomfort during and after the procedure. Numbing injections could mean extra discomfort for those who hate needles.

The essentials
What do you need to know before the treatment?

  • Consult with a recommended Dermatologist.
  • Talk about your skin concerns and the results you want to achieve during the consultation.
  • Stay off blood-thinning medications, like aspirin or ibuprofen, for a week before treatment to minimize the risk of bruising.
  • Make sure your practitioner knows about any medical conditions.
  • A few days before the treatment, make sure you stay away from sunlight to help prepare your skin.

What is the recommended post-treatment care?

  • If there’s any prescribed medication, such as antibiotics or painkillers, take them as directed by your doctor, to help reduce your infection risk and encourage healing.
  • Clean the area gently with mild soap, don’t soak it and stay out of the sun for at least three months.
  • Put bandages on the wound to protect it.
  • Signs to look for include redness, swelling, warmth or pus. If you see these, call your doctor immediately.
  • You need to take it easy for at least two weeks or so to avoid irritating the area and to lower the risk of infection.
  • Consume foods containing vitamins A, C and E, drink plenty of water and avoid sugary snacks to aid your skin’s healing.
  • Make sure to keep your doctor informed about your recovery so that everything heals correctly and any problems can be addressed in time.

How to prevent keloid scar from forming?

  • Keloids can be stimulated anywhere there are accidental or intentional injuries to the skin, including piercings or tattoos. If you are prone to keloids, you should stay away from those.
  • Wash injuries with soap and water, apply petroleum jelly and cover with a bandage. Reapply regularly until healed.
  • Scars can darken in the sun, so avoid the sun’s rays as much as possible, covering the wound and wearing UV-protective clothing. When it heals, use SPF 30+ sunscreen.
  • After the wound has scabbed over, silicone sheets or gel can repair broken blood vessels and help prevent keloids and improve scars.
  • Apply a prescription strength corticosteroid cream to relieve itchiness.
  • If you see thickening around a new piercing, take out the earring and use a pressure earring.

  • Keloids can rub or irritate; removal resolves those issues.
  • Removal alleviates symptoms even in the long-term.

Am I suitable
Is Keloid Scar Removal good for me?

Ideal patients for keloid scar removal are individuals with extensive or painful keloids that are fully healed and stable. The person must also be in good health, with no conditions that would impede healing, like diabetes.

Candidates should set realistic expectations, know that although the removal can help improve the appearance of the scar and make it feel better, it’s possible it could grow back. People who do not have a tendency to keloid are also good candidates for the procedure.

The risks
Can risks be prevented?

Removal of keloid scarring does carry some risks. There’s a risk of infection, bleeding or the scar returning, possibly even larger than before. Skin color could also change, particularly in those with darker skin.

If nerves are affected, there may be numbness or tingling. You should go over these risks with your doctor, to make sure you’re fully informed prior to the procedure.
