Why do you need skin cyst removal?

A cyst is a type of small, fluid-filled lump felt under the skin. They're often round, yellow, or white in color and have a dark center where the pus collects. Most of the time, cysts disappear by themselves and do not need treatment, but you should see a doctor if the cyst is causing pain, becomes infected, or concerns you. In general, skin cysts aren't harmful, but they definitely need to be evaluated to avoid missing serious health issues.

Do not try to pop a cyst at home, as this may lead to an infection. If the cyst is painful or causing you embarrassment, a dermatologist will be able to treat it. Cortisone injections can also be used to shrink inflamed cysts within 24 to 48 hours of treatment. For larger cysts, surgery is usually required. Harley Street Skin Clinic offers several cyst removal procedures that can manage or remove cysts with safe and personalized treatment.

Several benefits include:

  • Improved appearance
  • Quick recovery time
  • Long-lasting results
  • Targeted treatment
  • Boosted self-esteem

Types of Cysts

Epidermoid Cyst

Epidermoid cysts develop underneath the skin, also referred to as sebaceous cysts.

Pilar Cyst

Pilar cysts can be found in the hair follicles, most often on the scalp, also called sebaceous cysts.

Ganglion Cyst

A bump near joints or tendons, often over wrists, hands, and fingers.

Baker's Cyst

A fluid-filled swelling behind the knee that can result from arthritis of all causes.

Bartholin's Cyst

A soft lump filled with fluid that develops near the opening of the vagina.

Meibomian Cyst (Chalazion)

It is a tiny, painful bump that appears on your eye when an oil gland gets jammed up.

The Cyst Removal Procedure

Process of removing skin cyst.

How does cyst removal work?

A cyst is a small fluid-filled sac under the skin. If it's just drained and not completely removed, there is a high chance it will regrow. This can only be prevented with the surgical excision of the complete sac, usually performed with local anesthesia for safety. The doctor makes a tiny incision and drains the cyst from beneath the area of skin. Afterward, the area is sutured with minimal scarring, using dissolving or non-dissolvable stitches. Non-dissolvable stitches are typically removed in about 7 days, and for smaller cuts, sutures may not be needed at all.

Different methods for cyst removal

What methods are available?

Open Excision: This method involves a lengthwise incision that allows for complete cyst excision. The incision is sutured after the cyst is removed, leaving a scar that is either about as long as or slightly longer than the cyst itself.

Wider Excision: A wider excision is used for cysts that are inflamed, have previously undergone treatment and recurred, or have scarred. This technique involves complete removal of the cyst and some surrounding tissue to prevent recurrence.

Duration of the treatment.

How long does the cyst removal procedure take?

Sebaceous cyst removal typically lasts about 30 minutes, although some patients may be finished in even less time. This time frame includes preparation, administration, and recovery instructions. However, it may take longer depending on the size and location of your cyst. To get an accurate cost estimate based on your needs, please book a consultation to have the cyst examined.

Cyst removal at home.

Why is cyst removal at home a bad idea?

Squeezing a cyst will not resolve the issue; you need to remove the whole sac to prevent regrowth. Even if you drain it, the cyst may recur. It requires a certified dermatologist to perform this procedure with minimal damage and to ensure the cyst does not grow back.

Managing pain and discomfort.

Is cyst removal painful?

There may be some tenderness or discomfort once the local anesthesia begins to wear off. This is a natural occurrence, and in most cases, the daily pain can be managed with over-the-counter medications, as your doctor suggests.

Prepare

Before Treatment

What do you need to know before the treatment?

Important things to do prior to your procedure:

  • Shower before your treatment and cleanse the area you will have treated with antibacterial soap.
  • Avoid shaving the skin around the cyst.
  • Avoid medicine that lowers blood pressure on the day of your procedure.
  • Stop blood thinners except for Aspirin. You can take Aspirin if you need it.
  • Avoid taking medicine that prevents blood clots five days before your procedure and restart it immediately after the surgery.
  • Stop Plavix seven days before the procedure.
  • Discontinue Factor X inhibitors (e.g., Xarelto or Pradaxa) 3 days before; you can often resume the day after.

Recovery

After Treatment

What is the recommended post-treatment care?

  • You can put ice on and off to the area over the dressing, as ice will help with swelling.
  • Take Ibuprofen (200 mg or 400 mg) every six hours as needed for pain.
  • You will experience a little bit of swelling, and there may be lumps around the area where the incision was made.
  • If you have a compression dressing, leave it on overnight as this will help prevent blood from pooling in your wound.
  • You may shower and rinse your hair gently the following day, but avoid major sports for the next 2 days. Take it easy with vigorous activities.
  • You may also continue with your regular medications and diet.

Prevent

After Treatment

Is post-operative visit necessary?

Most of the time, there is no need to schedule a follow-up visit. The incision is closed with an absorbable suture that will dissolve on its own over a period of 4 to 6 weeks.

Recovery Timeline

How long it takes to recover from cyst removal will depend upon the kind and location of the inflamed cyst. For the most part, you can expect to be up and about in a week or two. Keep checking the area, and if it looks red, swollen, or if pus seems to be coming out, then call your medical team as there could be signs of an infection.

No recovery journey is perfect and they all are unique, so you need to be patient. Allow your body the time to heal, adhere diligently to the aftercare guidelines provided by your surgeon, and rest while in recovery. Light movements and healthy eating can also help keep you active, which supports a speedy recovery.

Am I suitable?

Who is the ideal candidate?

If you have a cyst, you would be a good candidate for cyst removal. Even if other treatments have not worked, many cysts will respond to treatment. This technique is particularly useful for those who have pain, soreness, inflammation, or recurrent infections.

If a cyst is affecting your confidence or daily life, its removal can have significant benefits for you as part of addressing well-being holistically. It is advisable to contact us so we can assess your case and give you information on what would be good for you.

What are the risks?

Can a risk be prevented?

Every surgical removal procedure is associated with risks, such as chances of scarring, a lesser chance of infection, and bleeding. Another problem is the distinct probability that said cyst can grow back, needing an additional removal.

You should discuss these risks with your doctor before going in for surgery.
