With over half a million procedures undertaken, you're in safe hands
A Chin Alteration, medically known as Mentoplasty, (mentum meaning 'chin' in Latin) is a surgical chin enhancement procedure used to bolster or lessen the appearance of the chin. It is often opted for as a more permanent alternative to Chin Augmentation - a procedure used to augment and reshape the chin using careful placement of Dermal Filler.
The remarkable difference a Harley Street Skin Clinic treatment can provide
Unlike Chin Augmentation, Chin Alteration is a surgical procedure and offers the patient lifelong respite from a chin they have been forerver unhappy with. Depending on the individual's concerns, this may involve reshaping the existing bone, manipulating soft tissue and/or introducing a specially-made, silicone implant or plate.
This is typically done by making a small incision either hidden beneath the chin or inside of the mouth, whereby your surgeon can access the structures beneath and work at altering the appearance of the chin from within.
Chin Alterations can improve upon any chin-associated woe: from reducing a jutting jaw to adding weight to an unbalanced/tapered face and drawing attention away from a particularly undefined neck. Whether it is a case of chin reduction or embellishment, there is a surgical solution at your fingertips.
Those in pursuit of a more 'masculine' aesthetic might seek a more squared, heavy chin and therefore select an implant which can give them just this. Those seeking a more traditionally feminine finish, however, may opt for a more angular, narrow implant or instead to have the bone chiselled to shape.
In fact - it is the versatility of this procedure which makes is so overwhelmingly popular amongst patients worldwide, providing jaw-dropping improvement to flat, oversized or recessive chins permanently. The answer to some of the most common questions you may have
It's only natural to have questions if you are considering pursuing a treatment for the first time, and at Harley Street Skin, it's important to us that you feel confident and comfortable at every stage of your journey. To help you find the answers you need, here are a few of the more common quibbles that we find our clients frequently ask...
There are several ways to conduct a Chin Alteration, however the three most prevalent ways include: bone revision, jaw readjustment and chin implants.
Surgeons will typically begin with a small incision - either underneath the chin or inside of the mouth, along the gum line. This is made just below the lower lip and is imperceivable to the untrained eye.
From here, surgeons may access the underlying tissues and bone structure, making use of necessary tools (or materials in the case of implantation) to readjust the framework of the chin and jaw. They will then close the incisions with fine stitching.
Chin Alterations are intended to be strong and long-lasting, maintaining the appearnce of the newly fashioned chin indefinitely. Patients find that Chin Alterations can help restore balance to the face, create a far more balanced profile, improve the appeared alignment of the teeth, improve facial symmetry and/or refine the jawline.
You can expect lifelong relief with surgical Chin Alterations. This is because they involve making surgical changes to the bone and underlying tissues of the face. Similarly, implants used during cosmetic procedures are extremely advanced and therefore designed to withstand lifelong wear, tear and degradation. Of course, should you feel that you would like to remove your implant further down the line, this too can be fascilitated.
Chin procedures are delicate to undertake and timing can vary depending on method. Generally speaking, however, implant procedures can take roughly 30-60 minutes, whereas more severe chin contouring and jaw realignment may require anywhere between 45-90 minutes+.
When carried out by a reputable surgeon, there should be very few longstanding side effects associated with Chin Alteration. Patients will likely be faced with some very small, residual scar tissue that has been purposely placed in an inconspicuous area (i.e. on the inside of the mouth on in the crease of the chin).
Please do note that, as this delicate surgery involves potentially impacting nerves connecting to the lips, some patients do experience some temporary numbness or increased sensitivity in the treated area. Full recovery from this may take up to four weeks.
Unfortunately, it is quite hard to comment on overall recovery times as this will entirely depend on the method required. Full recovery from Chin Alteration could take anywhere within the region of 2-12 weeks. (More superficial procedures, such as tissue removal, can take just 2 weeks, whereas jaw realignment may require between 8 and 12).
To speed up the recovery process, a diet of soft foods is recommended to minimise chewing. You should also note that, as this surgery sometimes operates inside of the mouth, it is important to rinse thoroughly after eating using an alcohol-free mouthwash.
Once more, this will depend on the invasiveness of the procedure. The majority of patients typically return to work after the first couple of weeks, but may do so with revised duties. This is because demanding physical activity should only be resumed around the fourth week of your recovery and special considerations should be made if your role is relatively labour-intensive. To be safe here, we encourage you to consult with your surgeon regarding your particular requirements beforehand.
