Since 2004, Harley Street Skin has been on speed dial to some of the world’s highest flyers thanks to the expertise of cosmetic tour de force.

What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?

I went to the University of St Andrews and earned a degree in Biochemistry, which I found fascinating. However, I discovered that other medical subjects – like physiology, anatomy, histology, and pathology – were even more compelling.

I realized I didn’t just want to find it interesting – I wanted to do it. That’s what led me to pursue medicine.

Can you share your educational journey? Where did you complete your medical degree and training?

I began my academic journey with a degree in Biochemistry at St Andrews from 1976 to 1980. During my time there, I decided to pursue medicine, and the university encouraged me to join their medical school. I started my medical studies in 1980 and later transitioned to Cambridge University for my clinical training. From 1983 to 1985, I studied clinical medicine at Cambridge, qualifying as a doctor in 1985.

Following my qualification, I gained hands-on experience through various house jobs. I served with the RAF at Ely, where I trained in general surgery, pediatric surgery, and neurology. I then returned to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge to focus on general medicine and cardiology.

My training extended across multiple specialties, including obstetrics and gynecology, elderly care, orthopedics, and trauma. I completed a year of general practice training, becoming a fully qualified GP.

During this period, I met Lesley through our children, who attended the same school. Our conversations eventually led to aesthetic medicine – a field that immediately captured my interest.

I pursued formal training in aesthetic medicine, followed by advanced courses in laser technology and application, an area I found both innovative and compelling. This journey ultimately shaped the career I have today.

How long have you been practicing medicine?

I’ve practiced medicine since 1985 – 39 years.

Have you pursued any additional certifications or specialized training beyond your medical degree?

Yes. They’re all part of my medical qualifications. I hold qualifications in obstetrics and gynecology, the DLO (Diploma in Laryngology and Otology)—a higher surgical qualification in ear, nose, and throat surgery – and the MRCGP (Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners). Additionally, I have a Bachelor of Technology in laser treatments and applications.

Can you describe your specific area of expertise within this specialty?

My medical specialty is ear, nose, and throat surgery – I found it both fascinating and deeply engaging, and I excelled at it. However, as a GP, I’m able to handle a wide range of disciplines, including cardiology, dermatology, psychiatry, general medicine, general surgery, and orthopedics. Being a GP means having a broad knowledge base and being prepared for anything.

But ear, nose, and throat are the areas I truly enjoy, and I have a deeper knowledge of them than most doctors.

How do you stay updated with the latest advancements and research in your specialty?

I stay current through various methods. I regularly read dermatology journals and publications – both in print and online – to keep up with the latest research and advancements. I also complete e-learning modules, which involve studying course materials and passing assessments to earn accreditation. Some modules are mandatory, while others are voluntary, but I make it a priority to complete as many as possible to ensure I’m well-prepared for my annual appraisal and consistently deliver the highest standard of care.
