MD, PhD

Since 2004, Harley Street Skin has been on speed dial to some of the world’s highest flyers thanks to the expertise of cosmetic tour de force.

What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?

When I was very young, my mother was often ill, and I watched how doctors helped her. That was when I first started playing as a doctor and dreaming of becoming one. Over time, this childhood fascination grew into a firm determination to pursue medicine.

Can you share your educational journey?

I finished school quite early, completing my A-levels by the age of 14 as part of a gifted children’s program. However, medical school deemed me too young to enroll, so I attended nursing school for a few years to gain maturity. By the time I was almost 17, medical school accepted me. I qualified in Moscow, Russia, and trained in general dermatology before specializing in aesthetic surgery at the Institute of Surgery of Vishnevsky. I completed a three-year fellowship, conducted research on skin healing and scar management, and earned my PhD.

What attracted you to this particular field of medicine?

I enjoy helping people look and feel their best. Many people, regardless of their natural beauty, have insecurities, and assisting them in achieving their ideal appearance can improve their confidence and well-being. While aesthetic medicine may not always be essential for physical health, it plays a significant role in emotional and psychological balance. In addition to my private cosmetic practice, I also work with skin cancer patients in the NHS, ensuring I continue contributing to public healthcare.

Do you have experience in different medical settings, such as hospitals, private practice, or research?

Yes, I have worked in both hospital environments and private practice throughout my career. Since moving to the UK in 1998, I have continued working in both sectors. Additionally, I pursued board certification in cosmetic surgery in the United States, as the UK does not have an equivalent certification.

How long have you been practicing medicine?

I have been practicing medicine for almost 30 years now. Even though I considered retiring, I found myself missing the work too much and returned to practice.

Have you pursued any additional certifications or specialized training beyond your medical degree?

Yes, aside from medicine, I have an interest in jewelry design. It’s a creative outlet that helps me manage stress. My husband often jokes about my expensive hobby, but it’s something I truly enjoy.

Are you a member of any professional medical organizations or societies?

Yes, I belong to the Royal College of General Practitioners. When I first moved to the UK, my Soviet qualifications were not fully recognized, and I faced challenges in obtaining specialist recognition. To practice independently, I pursued general practice training, which was a quicker route to gaining a recognized British qualification. Over time, my expertise has been acknowledged, but the process was quite political and bureaucratic.

What are the most common conditions or cases you handle in your practice?

At Hardesty Skin Clinic, I primarily see surgical patients, which aligns with how my services are marketed. However, we also handle various skin conditions. In the NHS, I deal more with medical dermatology cases, whereas in private practice, my focus is on facelifts, breast surgery, and other aesthetic procedures.

How do you stay updated with the latest advancements and research in your specialty?

I attend conferences and workshops regularly and engage in continuous learning activities. Medicine evolves rapidly, and it’s essential to stay informed. Nowadays, with technology and AI advancements, we have more tools at our disposal to keep up with the latest developments. However, while AI can be helpful, the doctor’s skill and expertise remain the most crucial factors in patient care.

Dr Chambers has more than twenty years of experience in the field of Dermatological and Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine and she practices as consultant both in an NHS hospital and London’s Harley street enclave.
