Harley Street Skin

The average Brit spends over 90,000 hours working. But could your job be affecting more than just your bank balance? Since the pandemic, more workers around the world have been working from home, and many have faced challenges such as less physical activity and longer working hours.

Ever wondered how your job affects your looks? Our new calculator reveals the potential toll of your work life, revealing ways it could be physically ageing you.

We’ve also offered top tips on staying youthful, such as having regular facials, self-care, and wearing SPF when working outdoors.

How to prevent visible ageing

Protect your skin using SPF daily

One of the easiest steps to avoid ageing is using a simple SPF moisturiser or serum. Using a moisturiser with SPF protects your skin from the sun's harmful rays, which can cause skin damage and increase your risk of skin cancer. You should wear SPF every day, even when it's cloudy or during winter, as the sun’s harmful rays can still reach you.

Sleep well

Getting enough sleep promotes healthy ageing. It is critical for repairing cellular damage and reversing ageing naturally. Sleep's benefits go beyond helping people feel rested and energised. Good sleep can help you experience better muscle repair, faster cognitive processing of new information, and a more muscular immune system.

Recent studies have also linked sleep to longevity. In one study of 1.3 million participants, researchers found that less than six hours of sleep daily caused a 12% greater risk of death.

Your sleeping position may also affect your wrinkles. According to a 2016 study, people who sleep on their side or stomach are prone to mechanical compression forces, which can speed up the formation of wrinkles and distort the skin. One way to prevent this is to try sleeping on your back.

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet

Studies show that eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables may help prevent damage that leads to premature skin ageing. Medical research also found that having a diet containing lots of sugar or other refined carbohydrates can accelerate the premature ageing of cells and tissues.

Stay hydrated

Drinking water is essential for good health. Your body needs water for almost every function it does. Water has vital functions like flushing toxins, digestion, and regulating body temperature. It can also keep your skin healthy and hydrated from the inside.

Use skincare products with vitamin C regularly

Vitamin C is good for anti-ageing because it can help with wrinkles, dark spots and uneven skin tone. Products incorporating vitamin C fight free radicals and harmful toxins that can damage the skin and lead to premature ageing. Eating a diet high in vitamin C may also help reduce wrinkles, such as citrus fruits, broccoli, red peppers, and spinach.

Treat yourself to a facial or chemical peel

If your skin feels the effects of winter and looks lacklustre, chemical peels can help treat apparent acne scars, uneven skin tone, and fine lines and improve the skin’s texture. They work by simply using an exfoliating solution to remove the outermost layers of skin. The regrowing skin has a smoother texture.

Add a retinoid to your skincare routine

Retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A, are one of the most studied anti-ageing ingredients. Sometimes referred to as retinol, retinoids can increase collagen production, which can help plump the skin. They also encourage skin regeneration and promote the creation of new blood vessels, which help improve the skin’s appearance and texture.

Your workstyle ageing score

Methodology

The calculator asks a series of questions about your job, such as how much time you spend sitting down, the number of hours worked, the regular hours, the day/night shift, the indoor/outdoor environment, your stress levels, and whether you work around harsh chemicals.

Based on these answers, the calculator will generate a score out of 100, with a below 40 score representing minimal ageing and an 80-100 score representing extreme ageing.

The score categories:

Score Bracket Result
Minor ageing <40
Moderate ageing 40-60
Severe ageing 60-80
Extreme ageing 80-100
