Rough skin
Dry skin is when your skin lacks moisture to keep it soft and smooth. It can be rough, flaky skin or even cracked, and can sometimes cause itching or discomfort. This can happen in cold or dry weather, after sun exposure or from using abrasive soaps or skin-care products.
Simple measures such as routinely using moisturizer and shielding your skin from the sun can make a difference. Everyone has different skin, so it’s all about the right products and oils routine. Dry skin that doesn’t improve may be a symptom of a condition like eczema (Atopic Dermatitis) or psoriasis. So it’s better to seek customized treatments to replenish your skin’s moisture and maintain it looking healthy and radiant.
Your skin might flake or shed small flakes.
Become grooved or uneven to the touch.
Tightens, particularly after a wash or when exposed to the cold.
Also itches, which can be mild to rather painful.
Skin can crack, and it can be painful, or even bleed.
Dry patches may become red or irritated, so you may feel sensitive skin.
You should see a doctor if your dry skin:
Worse, severely dry skin can lead to painful cracks that render your skin at risk for infections.
Chronic dryness can be marked by severe itching, which can cause redness or swelling.
Cracked or inflamed skin can allow bacteria and other germs to enter leading to infections.
Continued dryness can exacerbate skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, making them more difficult to manage.
Use a moisturiser to maintain the softness of your skin and prevent drying. Apply moisturizer immediately after a shower or washing your face to seal in moisture. And for more prolonged moisture, seek out the products of glycerin or hyaluronic acid.
Moisturise twice a day.
You should moisturise at least twice daily, morning and again at bedtime to treat dry skin. If you have very dry skin, you may wish to use a thicker cream or lotion. Always use moisturizer after washing hands or face.
Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and rough texture. Avoid hot water, use lukewarm water when you shower or wash your hands. This helps maintain skin hydration and health.
Best way to shower or bathe.
Keep your shower or bath to 10 minutes or less. Cleanse with a mild, fragrance-free product and instead of rubbing, pat your skin dry. As soon as you dry off, use a moisturizer to seal in moisture.
Certain soaps or cleansers can exacerbate dry skin by removing natural oils. Opt for mild and unscented products that will cleanse your skin without making it irritated or dry. You can also wear lip balm or petroleum jelly to your lips if you feel dryness.
What ingredients should you avoid?
Avoid products with alcohol, fragrances, harsh soaps, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or strong exfoliants such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) if you have dry skin. Such ingredients can remove your skin of its oils and cause irritation and dryness. Use gentle hydrating products to maintain skin moisturization and health.
Cold, windy or dry weather can dry out your skin. In cold weather, wear leather gloves, scarves and hats to shield your skin. You can also try a humidifier at home, to put moisture in the air.
Always wear your sunscreen.
Sunscreen is a must because it prevents your skin from being damaged and dried due to harmful UV rays. Always wear sunblock with SPF 30 or higher on a daily basis, even on cloudy and cold days.
Water consumption hydrates skin internally too. Try for a minimum 8 glasses of water to enable your skin to remain delicate and smooth.
Are there foods that help with skin hydration?
Yes! Enrich your food habit by eating foods which contain a good amount of water such as cucumbers, oranges, watermelon which hydrates your skin as well. Diet-rich foods high in omega-3, such as salmon and walnuts, are also good at keeping your skin moist.
