Cellulite explained

What is cellulite?

Almost 98% of us have a problem with the so-called cellulite, and that makes most people choose to hide parts of their body with visible cellulite. Known as a skin condition that causes a bumpy or lumpy appearance in areas like the thighs and buttocks, cellulite is caused by excess fat pressing against connective tissue beneath the skin. Even though cellulite is not harmful, many treatment of cellulite are available to cut it back such as laser treatment, acoustic wave therapy and other cosmetic dermatology options for reduction in cellulite by the breakdown of fat accumulation, tightening the skin. However, genetic factors and hormonal changes are one of the variables that cause it as most people have it. Even though there are cellulite treatments and treatment options that can minimise it for a short time, the real work is to learn how to love our bodies as they are.

Cellulite severity grade:

A grading for the severity of cellulite was first developed in 2009. It divided the appearance of cellulite into three grades:

  • Grade 1 (Mild): Skin has an orange-peel appearance with 1 to four shallow indentations, and a touch of-sagging.
  • Grade 2 (Moderate): The skin will present 5 to 9 medium-depth depressions (dimpling), combined with even more visible sagging of the skin on a “cottage cheese” appearance.
  • Grade 3 (Severe): The skin has a “mattress” appearance with 10 or more deep indentations and is severely sagging.

The symptoms

Dimpled skin

The most tell-tale approach is the texture of the skin on the cellulite prone areas are coming to be rough, like an “orange peel”.

Uneven surface

You will notice firm lumps and bumps beneath the skin, typically present on the thighs, hips, and buttocks.

Sagging skin

In most severe cellulite cases, you’ll have loose skin which contributes to an aged look.

Fat pockets

These deep fat areas may have visible pockets of subcutaneous fat, giving the fat beneath it a “cottage cheese” appearance.

Textural changes

The skin in these areas may feel different, softer or less firm than the surrounding skin.

The causes
What causes cellulite?

Cellulite forms when fat cells grow and penetrate the skin, they push connective tissue beneath the skin creating skin dimpling. The place it mostly occurs is in the thighs and buttocks. Research shows, several factors contribute to cellulite development:

  • Hormones. Certain hormones like insulin, oestrogen, and noradrenaline can cause fat cells to grow in size and quantity making cellulite get a lot more visible.
  • Ageing. When we get older our skin loses elasticity, and thins out so that it can sag a little and gives the possibility of having cellulite more visible.
  • Genetics. Cellulite occurs in areas where fat collects easily, however whether cellulite will be visible or not can be determined by genetic and lifestyle factors such as how fat is stored under the skin, skin texture and body shape.
The risk factors
What makes you likely to get cellulite?
  • Ageing. Cellulite can become more apparent as we grow old.
  • Gender. Cellulite is more common in women due to hormonal factors.
  • Genetics. The risk of having cellulite may also be a characteristic associated with family history.
  • Pregnancy. Hormonal changes in pregnancy can make cellulite more apparent.
  • Poor diet. Excessive amounts of salt and carbs, fats with little or no fibres can make cellulite worse.
  • Lack of exercise. Cellulite can be more frequent due to a sedentary life with little physical effort.
  • Weight gain. Extra weight can make cellulite worse by increasing the amount of visible fats.
  • Tight clothing. Wearing tight clothing will obstruct the progression of blood flow.
The complications
Hidden dangers
  • Is cellulite harmful to the body?

Cellulite is primarily a cosmetic dermatology concern and poses no serious threat to your health. But it can impact your confidence and body image, possibly leading to anxiety or pulling away from social situations.

Though cellulite isn’t that dangerous, it can make you more prone to infections if your skin is irritated. Furthermore, few of the invasive plastic surgery may bring bruising, swelling or unwanted side effects of a cosmetic surgery. The prevention
How does healthy eating help to prevent cellulite?

A balanced diet is a key factor in preventing cellulite. Antioxidants, vitamins, and fibre-rich foods help with inflammation and circulation which is good for skin health and reduce cellulite. Water-rich foods such as fruits, veggies, and lean proteins combat the fat block component of cellulite to create smooth skin. Additionally, inclusion of supplements with ingredients like caffeine and grape seed extract can potentially prevent cellulite formation.

How nutrients support skin health

Nutritious foods will retain the elasticity of your skin. The water in fruits and vegetables, along with fibre, flush out the toxins, the proteins and healthy fats are needed to support collagen production which will improve the texture of your skin among other benefits such as reducing cellulite.

Does any form of exercise prevent cellulite?

Exercise can greatly reduce the appearance of cellulite. Cardio exercises improve circulation, destroys fat, promote weight loss, and tone muscles, while strength training promotes firmer skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite. Increased muscle mass also leads to firmer skin. Also, regular exercise improves lymphatic drainage and the appearance of cellulite can be reduced by increasing circulation, reducing excess fluid,  and waste removal.

Strength training targets cellulite

Losing weight doing strength exercises builds tone in muscles lying beneath the skin. When all these muscles are used correctly, cellulite is less of an issue since increased muscle mass flattens out the skin.

What is the impact of smoking on cellulite?

One of the most common causes of cellulite is smoking as it plays a major role in decreasing skin elasticity while weakening the connective tissue. It reduces blood stream depriving the skin of nutrients, causing it to sag and cellulite to become more visible. It also destroys collagen, which can lead to wrinkles and cellulite.

Smoking cessation benefits your skin!

If you quit smoking, your skin will get its elasticity back post-smoking cessation. The healthier blood flow allows for collagen production to improve. One of the benefits is that it performs skin smoothing which will make your skin appear healthier thus also helping to work cellulite out with time.
